Revenue growth rate: formula and calculation example

The revenue growth rate shows how quickly sales revenue changes over time. For accurate comparisons, use net revenue (excluding VAT, net of returns/commissions) and normalize for seasonality, FX, and one-off events.

What the Metric Measures

It captures the speed at which turnover grows or declines, shows alignment with the plan, and the contribution of channels, regions, and categories. A distinction is made between organic and inorganic (M&A/one-time deals) growth rates.

Calculation

  • Monthly/quarterly, % = (Revenuet − Revenuet−1) / Revenuet−1 × 100
  • YoY, % = (Revenuecurrent − Revenueprior year) / Revenueprior year × 100
  • CAGR = [(Revenueend / Revenuestart)1/n − 1] × 100
  • For e-commerce — separately before/after promotions and after returns

Calculation example

Q3 revenue is 3,450,000 and Q3 last year was 3,000,000. Year-over-year growth = (3,450,000 − 3,000,000) / 3,000,000 × 100 = 15%. Comparing with the same period last year removes the effect of seasonality.

Data Sources

ERP/1C, CRM/billing, CMS/marketplaces, payment providers, web analytics; consistent reference lists of channels/categories/SKUs and rules for accounting for discounts and commissions.

Interpretation

  • Positive growth rate = more traffic/conversion, higher prices, or a better mix
  • Negative growth rate = loss of share, seasonal dips, channel fatigue, aggressive competitor discounts
  • Evaluate the drivers: price, volume, mix, discounts, returns, channels, FX, season
  • Check the “quality” of growth together with margin and returns

Useful Breakdowns

  • Channels (online/offline/marketplaces)
  • Categories/SKUs and first-purchase cohorts
  • Regions/points of sale/managers
  • New vs repeat customers; promotional vs base price
  • Currencies and FX normalization

Dashboard Visualizations

  • MoM/YoY trends with a seasonal shadow
  • Decomposition by price/volume/mix
  • Map of growth rates by channel/category/region
  • Plan vs actual with “minimum — norm — target” thresholds
  • Waterfall of the impact of promotions and returns
  • Forecast (rolling) to the end of the period

How to Set Targets

Set YoY and monthly growth rate targets, taking seasonality and the promotional calendar into account. Add guardrail thresholds for margin and discount share. Update the rolling forecast weekly/monthly.

Common Mistakes

  • Comparing unequal periods (holidays, different numbers of days)
  • Including VAT/delivery, ignoring returns and commissions
  • No FX normalization and no separation of M&A/one-time deals
  • Different revenue recognition dates across reports
  • Relying only on MoM without YoY/seasonal adjustment

Questions for Discussion

  • What contributed most to the growth rate: price, volume, or mix?
  • Which channels/categories are accelerating or slowing down?
  • What is the underlying growth rate without promotions, and what is the forecast with the current inventory?

Questions and answers

How do you calculate revenue growth rate?

Growth rate, % = (current period revenue − base period revenue) / base period revenue × 100.

What is year over year (YoY)?

Comparing a period with the same period last year so that seasonal swings are not mistaken for growth or decline.

What is CAGR?

The compound annual growth rate over several years: (ending revenue / starting revenue)^(1 / number of years) − 1.
