Branded traffic share: what it shows and how to measure it
Branded traffic share shows what portion of visits and conversions comes from brand searches and brand-awareness-driven clicks. A high share usually means better conversion and a lower CAC, but it needs to be balanced with non-brand traffic.
What the metric measures
The contribution of brand awareness to demand: how many users come by searching for the brand/product name or directly, and what share of conversions and revenue this generates.
Calculation
- Brand Share (sessions), % = Branded sessions / All sessions × 100
- Brand Share (conversions/revenue), % = Branded conversions (or revenue) / Total × 100
- Brand criteria: keywords containing the brand/model names/domain, synonyms, and common misspellings
- Count Direct separately; part of Direct can be attributed to the brand only under fixed rules
Agree on brand keyword/transliteration lists, UTM rules, the attribution window, and exclusions for self-referrals/payment gateways.
Calculation example
In a month 7,000 visitors came from search, 2,100 of them via queries with the company name. Branded traffic share = 2,100 / 7,000 × 100 = 30%. Growth after an ad campaign or a conference talk shows people started searching for the brand.
Data sources
GA4/web analytics, Google Search Console, advertising platforms (brand campaigns), CRM/billing, call tracking, PR/social media (brand mentions).
Interpretation
- Growing share — a stronger brand/PR/offline presence or better tagging; usually a higher CR and lower CAC
- Skew toward brand with weak non-brand — a risk for scaling and an inflated ROAS
- Declining share — possibly weakening awareness or competition in search
- Also evaluate the share of revenue/conversions and the impact on LTV
Useful breakdowns
- Organic/Paid/Direct/Referral; brand vs non-brand in search
- Regions/languages, devices/browsers, new vs returning users
- Campaigns/creatives, landing pages, time slices
Dashboard visualizations
- Brand vs Non-Brand trend over time (sessions/conversions/revenue)
- Share chart by channel and a Brand-share → CR/CAC/ROMI table
- Brand search trend (GSC) and correlation with Direct
- Alerts on sharp changes in the mix
How to set targets
Define a target range for Brand Share and KPIs for Non-Brand (volume/CR/CAC). Approve the brand query classification, negative keywords, a UTM guide, and a plan of brand activities; measure brand lift and the impact on CAC/LTV.
Common mistakes
- Misclassifying brand keywords and merging brand/non-brand
- Self-referrals/payment gateways in Referral; treating all Direct as “brand”
- Different attribution windows; no lists of transliterations/misspellings
- Evaluating sessions only, without quality and revenue
