Traffic structure: organic, direct, referral and paid

The traffic mix shows the balance of sources: Organic, Direct, Referral. It reflects brand strength, SEO quality, and the effect of partnerships, and it affects demand stability, CAC, and ROMI.

What the Metric Measures

The contribution of channels to visits, conversions, and revenue; detection of untagged traffic (dark traffic), the effect of PR/partnerships, and dependence on paid channels.

Calculation

  • Channel share, % = Channel sessions (or users) / All sessions × 100
  • Also evaluate the share in conversions/revenue, not just in visits
  • Organic: brand vs non-brand; Referral: group by domain/UTM
  • Fix the Channel Grouping, exclude self-referrals and payment gateways

Follow uniform UTM rules, anti-fraud, and cross-domain tracking; the goal is ≥95% of paid sessions with valid UTMs.

Calculation example

In a month there were 20,000 visitors: organic search 7,000, direct 4,000, referrals from other sites 1,000 and ads 8,000. Organic share = 7,000 / 20,000 × 100 = 35%, paid share 40%. Heavy reliance on ads means traffic will drop sharply without budget.

Data Sources

GA4/web analytics, MMP (apps), CRM/billing, CMS/logs, call tracking; UTM→channel mapping tables and exclusion lists.

Interpretation

  • Direct/branded Organic growing — brand strength or untagged traffic (check)
  • Organic (non-brand) growing — successful SEO/content
  • Referral growing — partnerships/PR; check traffic quality
  • Skew toward Paid — risk of high CAC and volatility
  • Evaluate quality: CR, AOV/ARPU, LTV, returns

Useful Breakdowns

  • Sources/mediums/channels, brand vs non-brand
  • New vs returning users; devices/browsers; geo/language
  • Entry pages/landing pages; time of day/days of the week
  • Referral by domain; cross-domain transitions

Dashboard Visualizations

  • Stacked channel shares over time
  • Sessions vs conversions chart by channel
  • Channel → CR/CAC/ROMI/AOV table
  • Referral map by domain
  • Sankey: source → entry page → conversion
  • Alerts on sharp changes in the mix

How to Set Goals

Define a target mix (Organic, Direct+brand, Referral) within CAC/ROMI constraints. Approve a UTM guide, tag coverage targets, and an SEO/content/partnership plan; set up alerts for drops in organic traffic or spikes in Direct.

Common Mistakes

  • Incorrect UTM mapping and self-referrals
  • Payment gateways/internal domains not excluded
  • Evaluating only the share of sessions without revenue/quality
  • Bot traffic, different attribution windows, no cross-domain tracking
  • Mixing brand and performance

Questions for Discussion

  • Where is the "dark" Direct, and how can UTM coverage be increased?
  • Which referrals deliver the highest CR/AOV and LTV?
  • How will a change in the mix affect CAC and ROMI over the next 30–60 days?

Questions and answers

What do organic, direct and referral mean?

Organic is visits from unpaid search results, direct is typing the address or using a bookmark, referral is visits via links on other websites.

How do you calculate traffic structure?

Channel share, % = visitors from the channel / all visitors in the same period × 100.

What traffic structure is healthy?

A balanced one: a large share of organic and direct traffic reduces dependence on ad budget, while ads give controlled growth.
