Landing page conversion: how to measure and improve it
Landing page conversion rate shows what share of visitors complete the target action on the page (lead, demo, purchase). It depends on offer relevance, the strength of the headline and CTA, page speed, mobile usability, and trust.
What the Metric Measures
The ability of a specific page to turn traffic into actions. Compare templates, offers, and creatives; find bottlenecks: CTA, form, trust, mobile UX.
Calculation
- CRlanding, % = Target actions / Sessions (or users) × 100
- Form Completion, % = Form submissions / Form starts × 100
- CTA CTR, % = Clicks on the primary call to action / Landing page views × 100
- Drop-off by form field and step
- CPL = Spend / Leads; CAC ≈ CPL / (Lead→Sale)
Align attribution, lead deduplication, and tracking of calls/offline conversions; exclude bots and test events.
Calculation example
A landing page had 4,000 visits and 240 visitors left an enquiry. Conversion = 240 / 4,000 × 100 = 6%. After changing the headline and cutting the form from 6 to 3 fields, the new version gave 7.5% under the same conditions — 25% more leads with no extra budget.
Data Sources
Web analytics/MMP, CRM/billing, forms/CMS/chat, call tracking, heatmaps/session recordings, exit surveys, speed metrics (Core Web Vitals).
Interpretation
- Growth = stronger offer/headline/CTA, simpler form, better speed and trust
- Decline = mismatch with ad expectations, form friction, weak above-the-fold, mobile issues
- Monitor MQL/SQL, Lead→Sale, and average order value to avoid “empty” growth
Useful Breakdowns
- Source/channel/campaign/creative
- Devices/browsers, languages/regions, new vs returning
- Landing page templates, CTA position, form length
- Segments by speed (LCP) and scroll depth
- A/B variants and content blocks
Dashboard Visualizations
- Funnel “Visit → CTA click → Form start → Submission → Lead/Purchase”
- Trend of CRlanding and Form Completion with plan vs actual
- Heatmap of form field drop-offs and A/B test results
- Scatter: load speed vs conversion
- Conversion map by channel/device
How to Set Targets
Set targets for CR, Form Completion, and Time-to-First-Contact; define Core Web Vitals thresholds (e.g., LCP ≤ 2.5 s, CLS ≤ 0.1), an A/B testing policy, and minimum lead quality thresholds (MQL/SQL).
Common Mistakes
- Mixing sessions and users in the denominator
- No deduplication or anti-fraud
- Ignoring call tracking and offline leads
- Focusing only on “quantity” without quality/processing speed
- Brand traffic not separated and mobile issues
- Incorrect goals/events and no speed checks
Discussion Questions
- What will deliver the biggest uplift: headline, offer, visuals, CTA, or a simpler form?
- Where is the main drop-off, and how can it be reduced?
- What effect will speeding up the page by 0.5–1.0 s have?
- Do the ad promises match the landing page content?
